Oversize vehicles will be allowed in the tunnel on Monday through
Thursday only.
Every effort has been made to minimize the impact of trains on
traffic, however from time to time scheduled and unscheduled
trains use the tunnel and an
occassional 15 to 30 minute delay can be expected.
There is a toll-charge to use the tunnel and the rates will vary
according to the type and size of vehicle. A standard passenger car
is $12.00.
When you are sailing the Alaska Ferry from
Whittier you must pay attention to the tunnel schedule. Always allow
for at least one tunnel opening to give ample time to
check in at
the required time.
Driving towards Whittier, the tunnel opens
for 15 minutes at the bottom of every hour. Then they close the
tunnel to allow for on-coming traffic leaving Whittier and for train
use.
